The development zone enjoys a convenient internal and external transportation. Externally, the water, air and land transportation routes extend in all directions; internally, eleven shuttle buses are crossing Jiangning Development Zone, seven of which are going between the downtown Nanjing and this development zone; The southern extension of the Nanjing Subway Line No. 1 under construction is running through this zone.

Transportation by water
Nanjing Port is a port for foreign trade leading to the ocean. The port area is 98 kilometres in full length and has 64 berths including 16 berths for ships with a tonnage of more than 10,000. Within the boundary of Nanjing, there are over 60 highway long-distance passenger traffic lines leading to all parts of the province; the Tianjin-Pukou, Shanghai-Nanjing and Nanjing-Wuhu Trunk Railways meet in Nanjing which has become an important hub of railways linking north China, east China with central China. After extension, the Nanjing Airport has more than 20 air lines leading to all major cities in the country.

To date, Nanjing Port has positioned itself as a key hub port between North and South China, linking rivers to the ocean, transporting between waterway and highway, and providing waterway transfer services; a major collection and distribution centre for the Yangtze River economic belt as well as for the commodities circulated in East China, and; a convenient transfer port for trading along the Yangtze¡¯s middle and upper reaches. After four major expansions during the past 50 years, Nanjing Port is now in possession of the biggest foreign trade port area along an inland river, the biggest oil dock and the biggest container port area, placing it top of the pile among Chinese inland river ports.

At present, containers are mostly handled in Longtan port area and Pukou port area, and up to 113 scheduled container courses run their way in or out of Nanjing Port weekly. Since 2000, Nanjing port¡¯s container traffic volume has grown an average of 26.5% each year, and it is estimated in 2007 the total volume will have achieved 1 million TEU. By 2020, Nanjing port will be developing into an international river-ocean hub port with comprehensive and complete logistics functions, while its cargo handling throughout will likely amount to 150 million tons and container throughput up to 6 million TEU.
